United Nations has agreed to a request made by the Turkish government to name the country as Türkiye instead of Turkey.
The Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the use of “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” for all affairs.
A UN spokesman said the country name change became effective from the moment the letter was received.
The move is seen as part of a push by Ankara to rebrand the country and dissociate it from the bird of the same name and negative connotations associated with it.
Türkiye is spelled and pronounced in Turkish as tur-key-YAY, according to the Guardian.
